In the Counter-Strike 2 community, there are many questionable statements circulating. Take, for example, a rather common tips on the launch option, which is mostly dangerous. Today, the CS.Money blog will answer other questions that are very popular and controversial: what resolution (alias aspect ratio) is better to play counter-strike 2?
Choosing the right monitor can greatly affect your counter-strike experience. The same thing can be said about the skin. Unfortunately, we cannot sell monitors to you, but thousands of different leather from low prices are waiting for you on our website.

What is a resolution?
Screen resolution is a term that is usually an abbreviation of the size of the image displayed on the screen. The higher the resolution, the more pixels and the more detailed the picture. That’s simple.
Resolution is usually measured as a pixel, horizontally and vertically. For example, 1920 × 1080 or 800 × 600. And although the resolution can mean any number, today’s monitor comes in one of several trendy formats. The most popular is 16: 9, format with 9 horizontal vertical vertical pixels. A 1920 × 1080 Basically only Figure 16: 9.

What resolution is in CS2?
Short Answer: Everything. You can run the game at 9:16, 1: 1, or 71:37. However, this experiment requires a few tricks. From the game menu, you can choose one of the four resolution formats:
- 16: 9 – 1920 × 1080 or 1280 × 720, for example;
- 16:10 – for example, 1440 × 900;
- 4: 3 – 1280 × 960, 1024 × 768, 800 × 600, and others;
- 5: 4 – 1280 × 1024.

As for the first three formats, you can activate it in the settings, then determine the desired resolution of the drop-down list below. With the latter, this is a little more interesting: To convert your image in Counter-Strike 2 into 5: 4 format, you must set the 4: 3 format in settings and then find a resolution of 1280 × 1024 on the list. This is how you can get the closest to the square aspect ratio in Counter-Strike 2.
You can also set your own resolution. For this purpose, you must determine the pairing commands -W and -H in the launch option. For example, typing commands -W 1000 -H 1000 will produce game launch with a resolution of 1000 × 1000. However, we do not recommend playing -playing with these commands, because there is no benefit from these experiments.
16: 9 vs 4: 3 – What is the difference between CS2?
The CS2 aspect ratio determines how broad or narrows the field of view in the game. There are several benefits for using 16: 9:
- The default aspect ratio for most modern monitors.
- Providing a broader field of view (FOV), which means you can see more game world on the side.
- Everything looks more natural and proportional.
CS2 runs in the original screen resolution by default, which is 16: 9. This resolution is best suitable for players who prefer balanced experience with good visuals.

4: 3 is the old standard used in square monitors, but is still popular in CS2. This can be used in two options:
- Stretching: making everything wider, including the player’s model, making the enemy look bigger and easier to hit.
- Black Bars: Maintain the ratio of the original aspects, but narrows FOV, reducing the visibility on the side.
Note that the Pro often uses a stretched image, without black stems. But the absolute minority of professional and casual players play with black bars.
Why 4: 3 is so popular?
At this point, you might have asked: why do we talk about the 4: 3 format at all? Indeed, it looks strange. According to the statistics on the software used by Steam users, most players have a 16: 9 screen. Moreover, the 1920 × 1080 resolution mentioned above is the choice of two of the three players! Counter-Strike: Global offensive dropped in 2012, when a big screen monitor has become an industrial standard.
So why is the discussion around 4: 3 still there? The reason is the inheritance of the previous counter-counter installments. Back in Counter-Strike 1.6 and Counter-Strike: Source Days, 4: 3 screens are very popular. Most pro play with them, and old people are finally accustomed to this format.
Why does the Pro play CS2 in 4: 3?
More than 70% of the Top Pro plays with the image stretched. Many players remain in 4: 3 because of habits, but there are concrete benefits:
- A bigger player model with a stretched image. The enemy looks wider, making it easier to recognize.
- Fewer disturbances. With a narrower FOV, there is less visual chaos, making it easier to focus.
- Higher FPS. Running games in 4: 3, especially with low resolution, can improve performance by making everything run smoother.
Apart from this benefit, some pro still prefer 16: 9. A broader FOV has benefits. In the end, it depends on personal preferences.

How do you do black rods or stretched images on CS2?
If you decide to give a 4: 3 aspect ratio, you have to deal with graphic drivers. Let’s start in an easy way. To play with Black Bars, you most likely only need to change the resolution in the counter-strike 2 settings. It must automatically produce images that are cut on your monitor.
In rare cases, images will be stretched soon. To overcome this, you must change some of the settings used to make a stretched image.
The ratio of square aspects in CS to full screen on NVIDIA GPU
- Right-click on the desktop and select the Nvidia control panel from the drop-down menu;
- In the open window, open the display tab and select adjust the size and position of the desktop;
- Select the GPU and activate the full screen scaling mode, thus stretching the image. If you need a black stem and the image has been stated, your choice is the aspect ratio;

The ratio of square aspects in CS to full screen at Intel GPU
- Intel® Graphics Open Command Center;
- In the program window, select the display;
- Find the resolution parameters and set the resolution you want in CS2;
- Below, near the scale parameter, select stretching. To get a black bar, just set a standard screen resolution, which will make the stretching option just disappear from the scale menu;
- Apply the settings and set the desired resolution in the game.
As you can see, making a stretching image is not a rocket science. You can achieve the desired results in just a few clicks.

Which is better in CS2: 16: 9 or 4: 3?
The short answer is both good. The optimal aspect ratio option in CS2 depends on personal preferences and play styles. Select 16: 9 if:
- You need fov as wide as possible to see more.
- You want the most beautiful and natural images.
- You don’t want to dig drivers and settings to stretch the game.
Or select 4: 3, especially if:
- You like the enemy that looks wider (in stretching mode), so it’s easier to aim at them.
- You are accustomed to this image format in the longer CS version.
- You want to use the same settings as many professional players.
Both options are good in their own way and no one provides serious benefits in the game. However, we recommend using 16: 9, because with this aspect ratio, the skin will look the best!

How do you make CS2 look good in 4: 3?
If you launch a game in 4: 3, you will easily pay attention that at first it does not look as good as 16: 9. Fortunately, this can be fixed. Here are some simple ways to improve appearance:
- Select the appropriate resolution. Many professionals use 1280 × 960, but you can go further and set 1440 × 1080. This will be the clearest and most beautiful image on ordinary monitors.
- Configure the graphics in the game. Quality of texture and shader, anti-aliasing and other parameters can and will affect image quality. If possible, they must be arranged to the “high” level.
- Usually used to the new appearance of the game. A stretched picture will look unnatural for some time. However, after a few matches, this feeling will disappear.
Ratio of aspects 16: 9 and 4: 3 have their advantages in CS2. To choose the right one for you, try both! Fortunately, the settings can be changed in a few minutes, but the chosen configuration can be used for years.
One last tip
To conclude, the CS.Money blog will give you two further advice. First: Don’t copy Pro settings. With a long time the earthquake passed, it was impossible to benefit CS2 by changing the configuration. Scenery, Resolution, Rat Sensitivity – All of this is a problem of personal preferences.
Second: If you decide to keep using the 4: 3 format, try playing with a resolution that has the same vertical size as your screen. For example, 1440 × 1080 if your standard monitor resolution is 1920 × 1080. This option will cut unnecessary perspectives, increase FPS, and help avoid bad and pixeled images.
